Round table: “The state language standard ‘Terminology of barrier-free access’: implementation in the state, education, culture and society”

By the end of the year, the National Commission on State Language Standards is to present terminology standards in five areas: cybersecurity, barrier-free access, rehabilitation, the penitentiary system and state border security. Until December 17, a public consultation on the draft state language standard was running on the Commission's website. Proposals came from language specialists, lawyers, human rights experts and members of the public. The President's Commissioner for Barrier-Free Access, Tetiana Lomakina, noted that the standard contains about 100 terms and also proposes removing from use words that are discriminatory or stigmatising, create negative stereotypes or devalue a person. It covers terms relating to a barrier-free society, including legal, social, educational, psychological, medical and architectural aspects. Once the document is finally agreed, it is also to be translated into English. Yevhen Komarov, deputy head of the Institute of Veterans “Architecture of Resilience”, attended the event. He is a regular speaker at webinars on adapting public spaces to inclusion requirements and therefore has a professional interest in the discussion of barrier-free terminology.
